I love working with little girls! There's a freedom to be creative in their shoots that I don't always have when shooting women (although I may ask a client if I can glue silver stars to their face at some point b/c it was gorgeous. Seriously.) I don't use makeup or stylists on children of this age (Reagan is 8), but with props and lighting we were able to capture so many facets of her beautiful personality, freckles, blue eyes and curls.
Reagan's mom was one of my portraiture clients (a lot of beauty in that family!), and before the shoot we were having a conversation where she told me that Reagan struggled with accepting her freckles and red hair because she looked different. As a photographer I look at her and think oh little one you are SO BEAUTIFUL, just wait until you can see it. But being unique isn't always fun when you're in school where being different is, for most people, hard. So it was incredibly special when, after seeing the images, Reagan told her mom that she thought she was beautiful. It made my heart so happy. Getting to pour that kind of confidence into a child -affirming that she is beautiful and special and unique just being who she is. That was a joy moment.
Then 6 of her images (the star set) were published on Vogue Italia the same month they released an issue with a freckled redhead on the cover and the words "THE NEW BEAUTIFUL" (April 2017 Vogue Italia)-- it was meant to be!
